The BBC’s first regional weather forecaster has died aged 86 after living an “amazing life”, his family said.

Craig Rich joined the BBC Spotlight team in Plymouth in 1978 and held the position for 25 years.

The former presenter died on December 1 and is survived by his wife Pat, to whom he was married for 62 years, and their three children Jo, Sarah and Thomas.

Mr Rich’s family said he “died peacefully” and that it was now time to celebrate his life.

Former BBC Spotlight presenter Justin Leigh said: “When I think of Craig I think of laughter. Smile and laugh.

“He had a twinkle in his eye and an almost boyish love of telling jokes.

“So as stressful and panicky as the newsroom could be at times, the moment Craig arrived was a moment of joy every day.

“He brightened the day endlessly.”

Craig Rich was seen presenting the weather forecast. He is seen wearing a gray suit with a white shirt and a blue patterned tie. In the picture he has short white wavy hair and is clean shaven.

Prior to his career in media, he had joined the Merchant Navy after leaving Devonport High School for Boys at the age of 16, and had been a captain on ships around the world.

The main routes he sailed were between South Africa and Great Britain.

Mr Rich was a fully qualified captain and an additional captain.
